A young woman fights a war, but can she defeat the war itself?
In the closing stages of the English Civil War, Parliamentary forces close in on Newark-on-Trent, one of the last bastions of the Royalist cause. Seth, a facially disfigured, total memory loss, suicidal PTSD case, works the river, and after dark slips the siege lines to deliver messages in and out. Molly, who had been married, but fell on hard times because of the war, is now a prostitute who sings at the Hart Inn. She is also a spy who unknowingly uses Seth to deliver military information out to the besieging forces. Seth takes part in Royalist raids taking suicidal risks.
When they meet, she strongly suspects, then finds out, that Seth is her estranged husband, Daniel. As the siege grinds on to its inevitable conclusion, Molly attempts to bring his memory back before Seth takes one risk too many.
