Rick R Dean, a (mostly) Historical Fiction Writer

A black and white portrait of Rick R Dean, a (mostly) historical fiction writer. He is an older man, wearing a hat and has a bit of stubble.

Rick R Dean is a writer of historical fiction. At least, most of the time that’s what he writes about. He’s a nerd about the art of story, having spent most of his life reading about and pondering on what makes stories great.

He lives in Warwick, UK, with his long-suffering partner and a horde of huge dogs that look scary but will sooner eat your ice cream than give you a funny look.

He used to spend his time poncing about in tights as a guide at Warwick Castle, but now he just ponces about at home with aforementioned dogs and partner.

What connects Rick R Dean’s books?

Rick R Dean has a love of history, with a particular affection for Richard the Third and the Napoleonic Wars. Many of his works take a look at the people that these periods affected. What was it like for the people experiencing these things in real time? How did the more vulnerable cope?

It’s these questions that sparked the novels You Met Your Father at Vyazma and For Love Nor Money, and the Loyalty Binds Me stage play.

Deano, a soon-to-be-released work, is a more contemporary novel, but deals with similar themes of grief, longing and mental illness.

What is Rick R Dean’s research approach?

Rick likes to make sure that his historical fiction writing is accurate to the time period, so his research is very in-depth. He likes to make sure that everything that does happen in his novels could have happened in the time it is set.

He combines watching documentaries and reading original letters and diaries with visiting locations and museums, so every detail is right.
